We remember with gratitude the services of Risaldar Bahadur Singh of this Regiment who had the distinction of shooting down a Sabre Jet with his anti-aircraft gun during the Operation "Cactus Lily". In 1989 Lt Col BS Lamba, SM shot down two dreaded militants in a fierce encounter in Kupwara sector and demonstrated exceptional bravery. Risaldar Ram Nath Ram and Ram Singh made the supreme sacrifices while fighting insurgents in the valley. In Operation Parakram during the fire in Ammunition Dump many Officers and men with utter disregard for personal safety, saved a number of Ammunition trucks.

In order to assist you in your missions, the Government has taken a number of steps to modernize the armed forces for enhancing your combat capabilities. Especially for the Armoured Corps I would suggest equipping the tanks with electronic warfare systems, secured communication systems, higher mobility and night fighting capability through state-of-the-art night vision devices. This will provide force multiplication for the Armoured Regiment.

Periodical training of 68 Armoured Regiment with different troops is essential for the growth of the regiment. Also, secured networking of all sub-units of the Regiment to their HQs and important locations, is essential. I am confident, that no sacrifice is too great for preserving the honour and integrity of our motherland. I am certain, that the 68 Armoured Regiment will march from strength to strength under the Standard which will inspire you to attain greater glory for yourselves, your unit and the nation.

I am aware that besides your military tasks, you are actively involved in civic actions and welfare activities. You have organized free medical camps in a number of adjoining villages. Helping your brother citizens and their children will go a long way in strengthening the bond between the Armed Forces and the citizens in every cantonment. I would suggest, your regiment can also undertake plantation of trees as part of your mission. It will provide environmental upgradation. I have visited a number of Units in forward areas in the northern sector. The Government is aware of the hardships being faced by our troops deployed in difficult areas. We are making all out efforts to improve the quality of life of our soldiers operating in far flung areas. For troops in peace areas, we are making concerted efforts to increase married accommodation and also to provide better educational facilities to their children.

Just a few hours ago I was with 81 Armoured Regiment. Now I am with you. The nation is confidence that you will be always winners with your disciplined life and professionalism. The nation is proud of you and in appreciation of your services, I am delighted to present the "Standard" to this 68 Armoured Regiment. I would emphasize, this honour bestowed upon your Regiment carries with it, added responsibilities. The professionalism that you have shown has enhanced the expectations from all of you. I am confident that you will strive with dedication, discipline and valour to maintain the best traditions of your Regiment.

I wish all ranks of the 68 Armoured Regiment the very best on this important day. I pray the Almighty that this "Standard" will motivate you to demonstrate many more "Parakrams" and bring "Vijay" in all your endeavours and you will win.
